4.  Let’s Talk IP Codecs    4/26/12 by Dave Immer

Some of you may get the impression I have low regard for IP codecs or using the internet for audio production. That is not the case. I love IP - when it behaves like ISDN. And while there is a lower risk of session interruption with actual ISDN, IP can certainly deliver good performance.

By far the most popular IP codec is Source-Connect, software that runs, conveniently, on both Macs and PCs, as a plug-in or a stand-alone desktop app. It uses the AAC algorithm. I like it a lot despite the fact that it’s not compatible with other IP codecs.

Dedicated stand-alone hardware ISDN/IP codecs are proliferating as well. One example is the Musicam Suprima, a full-featured browser-controllable dual-mode unit (as are many new models these days.) There is growing compatibility among competing hardware IP codecs but, currently, the best results are usually obtained when connecting to an identical model.

Let me know if you have questions or comments about IP Codecs. Thanks,
